What We Believe

B’nai Portland is an unaffiliated congregation serving the Jewish community of greater Portland, Maine. B’nai Portland is committed to providing Jewish education and supporting Jewish study for young and old, welcoming Jews of all observation levels, as well as interfaith families, to deepen our knowledge and observance of Judaism, to build community and support Tikkun Olam (repairing the world).
Position Statement Regarding Black Lives Matter

In the Talmud (Mishnah Sanhedrin 4:5), we learn that all people are descended from a single person so that no person can say, “My ancestor is greater than yours.” In the midrash in Yalkut Shimoni, we read that God created humanity from the four corners of the earth, yellow clay and white sand, black loam and red soil. Therefore, the earth can declare to no part of humanity that it does not belong here, that this soil is not their rightful home.
B’nai Portland supports Black Lives Matter as a part of our mission; that Tikun Olam (repairing the world) is a moral imperative and so we support social action that helps ensure that people with brown or black skin are treated equally in our legal system and in all systems of society. #BLM
As always the Bnai Portland Community is open, and we welcome all who want to worship and celebrate with our congregation.
